Why You Don't Get "Before & After" Videos From Positive Dog Trainers

On the latest episode of The Family Pupz Podcast, the owner and head trainer of Sit Pretty Behavior & Training, Vanessa Charbonneau, and Tanya, talk about why we love "Before & After" dog training videos so much as a society, why it's so hard to stand by and look at (never mind record) a dog "losing it", and why positive reinforcement dog trainers don't lose sleep over it.

Check out their answers above!

Family Pupz: Yeah, well and that can be such a differentiating point when it comes to us showcasing our work as dog trainers, even when it comes to social media, because different camps of training always make a point to show dogs who are “losing it”.

Whereas for us, this is the hardest thing to look at. And we can't be just recording, we need to jump into training.

So yeah, it's just interesting how those differ.

And then, at the same time how much people just love that idea of, “before and after”.

Vanessa Charbonneau: YES

Family Pupz: Ugh, we love it, we looooove it as a society.

Vanessa Charbonneau: We do! I think we just feel like our dog is maybe the only dog who behaves that way. And you have to see what's going on in order to help me.

And I always tell my clients, like, I didn't go through all of the schooling I went to so that I had to see your dog in action.

I don't need to see him. I don't need to, I've seen him, I’ve seen a dog lose it in the car before, I will see one again, I don't need to see it, we can get a plan in place without that.

And I don't want to let the dog rehearse that behavior anymore than absolutely necessary.

So, we don't get the fancy before and afters. That is a sacrifice I'm 100% willing to make.
Family Pupz: Me, too.
